When you read the header you might think to yourself ” How can getting the first overall pick back hurt this 76ers team?” I am going to tell you exactly how.
Throughout this season the Sixers have been at the bottom of the league in turnovers. The Sixers are averaging 18.1 turnovers per game. The next closest team to them is the Los Angeles Lakers with 16.5 per game.
Fultz is just like any other 19 year old rookie coming into the league. He is going to make rookie mistakes. We all know that Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid have their own share of turnover problems. Adding another young rookie to this team will just add more turnovers. It is going to take months for Fultz to get used to game speed and being guarded by NBA caliber players.
Also we must mention that Fultz will be playing out of position when Simmons is on the court. Fultz was the main point guard in college, but with Ben Simmons running the point Fultz will be moved to the two guard.
All of these problems point to more turnovers for the 76ers. I am not saying that Fultz coming back is going put this team back to their “10-72” season play just two season ago. I am saying that the Sixers are going to have to play through even more turnovers and adjust to these growing pains that all young teams deal with.
With all of this said I am excited for the future of the 76ers. As a 76ers fan my whole life, the last 6 seasons have been horrible. We have been told to “Trust the Process” for many years now. The exciting thing is the Process is starting to unfold in front of our eyes.
Ben Simmons is a monster on the boards, dishes out assists like its nothing, and finishes at the rim like LeBron James. Dario Saric is the heart of our team. He plays blue collar basketball and is a very good replacement when Embiid sits. Markelle Fultz can be the dynamic score that Sixers need. He can drive and shoot the ball. When Fultz gets more NBA experience he will be the Sixers go to guy when the game is on the line. Last there is Joel Embiid. He is just Joel Embiid. There are not many words to describe a 7’2 player with his skills and shooting ability. Embiid has the ability not just to be the best big man in the NBA, but the best big man the NBA has ever seen.
For all of this to wok out some things do need to happen. Ben Simmons needs to learn how to shoot a jump shot and free throws. There are many 6th graders who can shoot the ball at a higher percentage than Simmons does. Joel Embiid also needs to stop flinging his body around. Embiid is the core of this team and with no Embiid there is no Process. He is a 150 dollar man and he needs to take care of himself like one.
If the Sixers can maintain good health from their core players and get a lot of productions from other players like JJ Redick, Robert Covington, and TJ McConnell there is not saying what the Sixers cannot do. If all of the pieces fall together this Sixers team can become the next NBA dynasty.
